In addition to the day-to-day operations of the KC Animal Health Corridor, including public policy development, networking, business recruitment, marketing, communications and research collaboration, the following objectives that will be pursued in 2012 and beyond.
National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) Interaction Plan
- Under the leadership of Advisory Board; establish a NBAF Industry Research Taskforce consisting of identified R & D leaders from Advisory Board companies and the Dean’s of the Vet Schools from Kansas State University and University of Missouri.
- NBAF Industry Research Taskforce will engage the NBAF Research Transition Working Group to identify a joint/integrated research community comprised of the Corridor companies and federal researchers.
- Taskforce members will promote Corridor companies and resources to NBAF stakeholders to highlight collaborative opportunities.
- Continue to support and promote NBAF related activities to the Corridor, to the AH industry and other stakeholders.
Support the Establishment of the Center for Animal Health Innovation
Under the leadership of the Advisory Board, the Corridor will support efforts to establish the Animal Health Innovation Center, including:
- Participation of company R&D leaders to establish the Center and further develop the Strategic Plan, including the funding strategy for years 2-5
- The Corridor will provide an in-kind contribution to the Center, including; public policy development, networking, business recruitment, marketing, communications and research collaboration.
- The Corridor will consider requests for assistance from the Center as it develops its operational structure and defines the Strategic Plan and funding strategy for years 2-5.
Workforce Development
- Under the leadership of Dr. Keith Gary, the Animal Health Industry Human Resources Taskforce (AHIHRT) will meet at least twice a year.
- Internal career pathways for entry level employees will be provided to the Biosciences Workforce Development Taskforce (comprised of education providers) to develop curricular solutions to the needs of animal health companies.
- The AHIHRT will continually monitor broader regional workforce development efforts to identify opportunities for sharpening a focus on needs of the animal health industry.
- Identify mechanisms to engage/inform local secondary and post-secondary students of career opportunities in the Animal Health Corridor through awareness campaigns, social media, and industry internship experiences to meet animal health industry workforce needs.
- Seek opportunities to engage partners around expanding regional capacity for student internships and teacher externships within the animal health industry.
- In preparation for needs of the NBAF, work with K-State to identify critical skills necessary for working in biocontainment environments and develop a plan to share that information with appropriate educational providers to build and/or inform their curricula.
Enhance Engagement of Animal Health Industry with the Corridor
- Establish a KC Animal Health Corridor Twitter feed and attract at least 250 followers.
- Enhance Corridor media efforts through continued partnership with industry media consultant that will proactively place Corridor news in animal health targeted publications and other media. Coordinate Corridor media briefing in a major outside media market.
- Promote and distribute editorial content (e.g. blogs, op-eds) from Corridor Working Group and Advisory Board members regarding Corridor efforts through traditional and social media.
- Continue to quarterly publish the Inside the Corridor newsletter.
- Continue email communication to local animal health industry distributed on a real-time basis with news updates of the Corridor including new company announcements, legislative alerts or other important issues.
- Continue direct mail campaign to targeted animal health CEOs that have locations outside of the Corridor region to broaden awareness of the assets and benefits of a Corridor location.
- Continue local and national events targeted at executives of animal health companies including Corridor Conversations, North American Veterinary Conference, Western Veterinary Conference, American Veterinary Distributors Association, BIO, CVC Research Symposium, Animal Health University/Industry Tech Transfer event, Animal Health Homecoming event and the Animal Health Investment Forum.
- Work with partners to coordinate co-promotion of CVC Corridor events including CVC Research Symposium, Animal Health University/Industry Tech Transfer event, Animal Health Homecoming and Animal Health Investment Forum.
- Work in coordination with the Advisory Board, Gary Forsee and the Working Group to identify speakers and topics for the Animal Health Global Innovation Summit
- Develop strategies for execution of the Animal Health Global Innovation Summit
- Develop a timeline for execution of the Animal Health Global Innovation Summit as the conference organizer, as well as for being the host city
Enhance Public Policy Development Efforts
- Develop and implement a public policy agenda for the states of Kansas and Missouri with specific issues that will create an environment for animal health companies to succeed in the region.
- Create a comprehensive federal public policy agenda that focuses on enhancing the assets of the Corridor including workforce development and overall recognition of the Corridor.
- Support legislation that will benefit the animal health industry, working in partnership with Animal Health Institute, the American Veterinary Medical Association and other relevant organizations.
- Enhance awareness of the Corridor to the congressional delegation through the D.C. Fly-in event, which provides congressional staff members an in-depth look at the Corridor.
- Track all state and federal legislation that may impact and/or benefit the Corridor and provide updates as well as generate letters of support for legislation.
- With input from animal health companies, identify legislative and policy issues impacting the industry on the federal level and in Missouri and Kansas.
