The stockyards and meatpacking plants no longer are the predominate economic forces in cities like Kansas City and St. Joseph. But the legacy of this past lives through scores of companies ranging from global pharmaceutical firms developing the latest in animal vaccines to small businesses selling flavorings used in dog and cat food.
A new effort strives to build on this legacy by promoting a corridor stretching from Manhattan to Columbia as a center for the animal health and nutrition industries. The campaign, led by the Kansas City Area Development Council, Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute Inc. and Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, seeks to raise awareness of what a recent study called the world's largest single concentration of animal health interests.
This week's Kansas City Business Journal includes a 24-page special report on the reasons why animal health companies have flocked to the region in the past; listings of companies involved in and supporting the animal health and nutrition industries; the links between advances in animal and human health; the role of universities in the development of new products; and the attempt by area economic officials at "Branding KC." |
