An Idaho-based veterinary supply company is setting up shop in Edwardsville, the latest success in an effort to attract animal health businesses to the area.
Officials with MWI Veterinary Supply Inc. and the Kansas City Area Development Council said Wednesday that MWI plans to open a 105,000-square-foot distribution center in the MidPoint Corporate Centre during the fourth quarter of this year. The new facility will create about 30 jobs.
“MWI is excited to have a presence in the Kansas City region,” Jim Cleary, MWI’s president and chief executive officer, said in a release. “We conducted a search for locations for the new facility, and Kansas City made the most sense due to the logistical advantages and the concentration of animal health companies in the area.”
MWI is a leading distributor of animal health products to veterinarians around the country. It sells products such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, parasiticides, diagnostics and pet food. Its fiscal year 2006 revenues totaled $606 million.
MWI is the largest animal-health company to choose the Kansas City area for an expansion or relocation since the launch of the KC Animal Health Corridor initiative last year, according to the Kansas City Area Development Council.
The goal of the initiative is to attract more animal-health businesses to the area. More than 120 animal-health companies have a presence in the corridor stretching from Columbia, Mo., to Manhattan, Kan.
The initiative in the past year has attracted a relocation or expansion by Synbiotics Corp., IdentiGEN North America Inc. and the U.S. Animal Health Association.
“MWI’s decision to locate a new operation in our region is a direct result of our KC Animal Health Corridor outreach efforts,” said Bob Marcusse, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas City Area Development Council. “This announcement demonstrates that our initiative is working.”
Marcusse said the area development council and KC SmartPort, an organization that promotes trade in the area, worked with the Kansas Department of Commerce, Wyandotte Development Inc., Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group and the Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, Kan., to land the MWI facility.
