Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., will address a joint session of the Legislature on Monday to outline plans for bringing a $450 million federal research facility to Kansas.
Fourteen states are competing to host the National Bio and Agro- Defense Facility, which is projected to have an economic impact of $3.5 billion over the next 20 years. Construction of the facility for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would employ an estimated 1,000 workers and provide hundreds of permanent jobs.
"Competition across the country for this facility is intense," Roberts said. "We need the support of the Kansas Legislature to convince the decision makers in Washington that locating this new facility in America's Heartland is a natural fit."
Roberts was invited by House Speaker Melvin Neufeld, R-Ingalls.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius recently appointed Roberts to co-chair a task force to coordinate the state's bid for the research lab. Potential sites in Kansas are Manhattan and Leavenworth.
